Vein Treatment
Thread veins are tiny veins that appear most commonly on the cheeks, nose & legs. Small thread veins are red, but larger ones can appear more purplein colour. Thread veins are commonly known as:
-
Spider Veins
-
Broken Veins (inaccurate as they are not actually broken!)
-
Capillary Veins
Normally, the tiny veins in the skin are invisible, but in some people they expand & show through the skin.
What causes thread veins?
50% of the population will develop problems with thread veins during their life. They are caused by a variety of factors including exposure to sun, wind & extremes in temperature. Steroid creams & hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy may also induce them. In most cases, for genetic reasons some individuals are more prone to develop thread veins than others.

Realistically what can be done?
Thread veins are not dangerous & are asymptomatic (they have no adverse affect or feeling) so the first question to consider is whether they are a cosmetic problem. If you dislike their appearance & want to improve it then consideration must be given as to whether they are associated with varicose veins. If this is the case then the results of treatment are better if the varicose veins are dealt with first.
Start-Smiling offers Sclerotherapy & Veinwave for the treatment of thread veins. These are the most successful treatments currently available, supported by medical research.

Some people may consider laser treatments. Research shows that laser treatment is less effective than microsclerotherapy. In a recent medical review in the Drugs & Therapeutics Bulletin (the medical equivalent of 'Which' Magazine), it was concluded that microsclerotherapy was more effective than lasers & therefore it should be used in preference. Lasers also have the disadvantage that can be very painful & occasionally it can produce permanent areas of whiteness in the skin.
