What Is Emergency Dentistry?
Emergency dentistry provides prompt assessment and treatment for problems such as severe toothache, swelling, dental injuries, broken teeth or painful lost fillings and crowns.
Our first priorities are to identify the cause, help relieve your pain and stabilise the problem. Depending on your needs, this may involve repairing a tooth, securing a crown, beginning root canal treatment, managing an infection or removing a tooth that cannot be saved.
Some problems can be resolved during the appointment; others need further treatment. Either way, we’ll explain our findings and give you a clear plan.

Emergency Dentistry At Start Smiling, What Makes Us Different?
Prompt care begins with an accurate diagnosis. We combine careful examination with advanced diagnostic equipment, including digital X-rays and, where clinically justified, 3D imaging. Clinical photographs and optical scans can also help us assess damage and plan repairs.
Our experience allows us to look beyond immediate pain relief. Tom holds a master’s degree in Endodontic Practice and uses a specialist dental operating microscope and specialist equipment for root canal treatment and retreatment. Both Tom and Tony have extensive restorative and surgical experience, allowing us to plan how a tooth can be saved, repaired or replaced where necessary.
One of the benefits of being an existing Start Smiling patient is access to out-of-hours communication with a dentist for emergencies. This provides guidance on your symptoms, what to do next and whether you need urgent assessment. It also helps us maintain continuity with a team familiar with your dental history.

What Is Considered A Dental Emergency?
Contact us promptly if you have persistent or severe toothache, swelling, a suspected abscess, an injured tooth, or a broken tooth, filling or crown that is causing pain or affecting your ability to eat.
A knocked-out adult tooth needs immediate attention. If you’re unsure how urgent your problem is, call us and describe what has happened so we can advise you.
You don’t need to wait until the pain becomes unbearable. Early contact gives us the best opportunity to assess the problem and arrange appropriate care.

How Quickly Can I Be Seen?
We aim to see emergency patients on the day they call and, wherever possible, within two hours of arranging the appointment. Our team works closely together to accommodate urgent care alongside scheduled treatment.
Please call the practice as soon as you notice a problem so we can assess its urgency and arrange the earliest appropriate appointment.
For existing patients with an emergency outside opening hours, out-of-hours communication with a dentist is available for advice and guidance. The dentist will advise whether assessment can wait until the practice reopens or whether more immediate care is needed.
How Much Does Emergency Dentistry Cost?
Costs depend on the assessment and any treatment needed.

After Your Emergency Appointment
Before you leave, you’ll understand what we have done, what to expect and whether further treatment is required.
If the emergency appointment is the first stage of treatment, we’ll plan the next steps to repair, protect or replace the affected tooth. Tom and Tony’s experience in root canal treatment, restorative dentistry, surgery and implants allows us to consider the full range of suitable options.
We’ll also explain how to care for the area and when to contact us again. Once the immediate problem is settled, ongoing examinations and hygiene care help reduce the risk of further emergencies.
