Are Dental Crowns Painful? What to Expect During Treatment

During a dental crown procedure most patients feel movement, pressure and the sound of the dental handpiece, but not sharp pain. We use local anaesthetic and confirm you are fully numb before we begin. A numbing gel can be used on the gum first if helpful.
Afterwards, mild tenderness, temporary crown discomfort and tooth sensitivity are common. These usually improve within 48 to 72 hours and continue to settle over one to two weeks.
If discomfort is severe, getting worse, or lingers beyond what we have advised, please contact us for a review.
What is a dental crown and when might you need one?
A crown is a custom-made cap that fits over your tooth to protect it, restore strength and improve function. We may recommend a crown if you have a very large filling or fracture, a tooth rebuilt after root canal treatment, or wear that affects your bite and chewing. Crowns can also improve shape and function for teeth that have lost a lot of structure.

Does getting a crown hurt? What you will feel during treatment
We use local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding gum so you should not feel sharp pain. Before we start, we always check your numbness. If you feel anything more than pressure, tell us and we can pause and top up the anaesthetic.
During preparation you may notice:
Pressure and gentle movement while the tooth is shaped
Vibration and sound from the dental handpiece
Water spray and suction
These sensations are normal. Many patients who ask "do dental crowns hurt?" feel reassured once they know what to expect and that they are in control. We will check on you often and can take breaks whenever you need.
Step by step: Your crown journey at Start Smiling
Visit 1. We examine the tooth and take X-rays if needed. Once you are numb, we gently shape the tooth, take impressions or digital scans, and place a smooth temporary crown to protect it. We will explain how to look after it to reduce the chance of temporary crown discomfort.
Between visits. The temporary crown protects the prepared tooth while your custom crown is made. Avoid very sticky or hard foods on that side and take extra care with flossing. If the temporary loosens or comes off, call us so we can refit it.
Visit 2, your crown fitting appointment. We remove the temporary, try in your new crown, check the fit and colour, and make fine bite adjustments. When both of us are happy, we bond the crown in place.
This two-visit approach is common for dental crowns in Essex and helps us achieve a secure, natural-looking result.
After your appointment: what is normal and how long it lasts
It is common to notice the following after a crown:
Mild gum tenderness around the tooth
Sensitivity to hot or cold drinks, or to bite pressure
Light aching that settles with simple measures
Most discomfort improves within 48 to 72 hours. Sensitivity can continue to settle over one to two weeks as the tooth and gums calm down. Your bite may feel slightly different for a few days while your mouth adapts. It should not feel obviously high or sharp. If it does, please book a quick adjustment.
Simple ways to ease post-treatment discomfort
Consider over the counter pain relief if you can take it, and only as directed on the packet or by a pharmacist. Do not exceed the stated dose.
For the first couple of days, avoid very hot, very cold, hard or sticky foods. Chew on the other side while things settle.
Use a soft toothbrush and consider a desensitising toothpaste for a few weeks.
Do not chew while you are still numb. This helps avoid accidentally biting your cheek or tongue.
Keep the area clean. Gentle brushing and careful interdental cleaning support healing and comfort. A warm saltwater rinse can soothe the gum if it feels tender.
Advice may need to be tailored to you. Let us know about any medical conditions or medicines so we can recommend suitable options.
When pain is not normal: signs to call us
Contact us promptly if you notice any of the following:
Severe pain that does not ease, or pain that worsens after a few days
A bite that feels high or uneven
Swelling, a bad taste that does not resolve, or fever
A loose, broken or lost temporary or final crown
Possible causes include an inflamed nerve inside the tooth, an uneven bite, irritation of the gum, or a problem under the crown. These issues are usually straightforward to assess and treat. If the nerve has been affected, we may discuss further care such as Root Canal Treatment to save the tooth if suitable.
If you develop severe swelling, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing, facial trauma or feel very unwell, seek urgent professional or medical help immediately.
Nervous about treatment? We are here to help
Many people search for a nervous patient dentist in Essex or a sedation dentist in Ingatestone because past experiences have made them anxious. We will take time to explain every step, agree a signal to pause, and proceed at your pace. We can also discuss relaxation techniques and, if appropriate, our support for dental anxiety and sedation options. Suitability for any relaxation or sedation option depends on your oral health and a clinical assessment.
Looking after your crown for the long term
Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth every day
Attend regular check-ups and hygiene visits so we can spot issues early
Avoid habits like nail biting and opening packets with your teeth
If you grind or clench, ask us about a nightguard to protect your new crown if suitable for you
